Betulae pendula Roth

For this Natural Dye no mordant is necessary.

Use this Natural Dye at a ratio of 100% dyestuff to fibres.

Best to soak the bark for 72 hours before using to dye with.

Simmer for at least 1 1/2 hours to extract the colour which gives pink/tan shades.
Deeper shades of pink can be produced if an Alum mordant is used.

For cellulose fibres use either
Aluminium Acetate at 5% in a heated mordant bath.
Aluminium Lactate at 5% in either a cold or heated mordant bath.

The left-hand skein shows how all the skeins originally came out of the dye pot. The other four were each dipped into a different modifier bath for approximately 10 minutes. From left-to-right these modifier baths were Citric Acid, Ammonia, Copper and Iron.

The dyed samples above are as follows
Alum – no modifier = red brown
Alum + Citric Acid = pale red brown
Alum + Ammonia = deep red brown
Alum + Copper = deep red brown
Alum + Iron = dark brown black
