£5.00 inc. VAT

Rhamnus catharticus
Also known as Persian Berries and Sea berries.

Please Note: The actual product may look slightly different to the photo.

This Natural Dye produces a yellow colour, but as these are mature berries, the colour may not be as bright as the immature berries. Best to soak for 24 hours, if the berries are crushed the dye will be a brighter yellow.

Use at 50% per dry weight of fibre.

An Alum mordant is required for protein fibres.

For cellulose fibres use either
Aluminium Acetate at 5% in a heated mordant bath.
Aluminium Lactate at 5% in either a cold or heated mordant bath.

The picture shows wool which has been mordanted with alum, then dyed with buckthorn berries.

The left-hand skein shows how all the skeins originally came out of the dye pot. The other four were each dipped into a different modifier bath for approximately 10 minutes. From left-to-right these modifier baths were Citric Acid, Ammonia, Copper and Iron.

The dyed samples are as follows
Alum – no modifier = creamy yellow
Alum + Citric Acid = pale creamy yellow
Alum + Ammonia = yellow
Alum + Copper = green yellow
Alum + Iron = beige

Not food safe, so please do not make a drink with this dye.
