Dactylopius coccus.

This is made from the beetles. Best ground into a powder before using. Use at a rate of 30% to weight of fibre.
Make into a paste before using and simmer for 5 mins before putting through a fine cloth to remove any black parts, which will mark your fibres when dyeing.
This is a strong dye and can be used several times giving slightly different tones and shades.

An Aluminium Potassium Sulphate mordant is required for protein fibres.

A tannin and Alum (PAS) mordant are required for all cellulose fibres.

For cellulose fibres use either
Aluminium Acetate at 5% in a heated mordant bath.
Aluminium Lactate at 5% in either a cold or heated mordant bath.

The left-hand skein shows how all the skeins originally came out of the dye pot. The other four were each dipped into a different modifier bath for approximately 10 minutes. From left-to-right these modifier baths were Citric Acid, Ammonia, Copper and Iron.

The dyed samples are as follows
Alum – no modifier = pink
Alum + Citric Acid = pale pink
Alum + Ammonia = dark pink
Alum + Copper = purple
Alum + Iron = brown

Not food safe, so please do not make a drink with this dye.
