Solidago virgaurea

For this natural dye, with the use of an Alum mordant a yellow colour is produced, and a clearer yellow is achieved if the dye pan is kept below a simmer for 1 hour.

Use Alum for all protein fibres
A tannin and Alum or Aluminium Acetate / Aluminium Lactate can be used for all cellulose fibres.

Use this Natural Dye at a ratio of 100% – 150% dyestuff to fibre.

The picture shows wool which has been mordanted with alum, then dyed with golden rod flowers.

The left-hand skein shows how all the skeins originally came out of the dye pot. The other four were each dipped into a different modifier bath for approximately 10 minutes. From left-to-right these modifier baths were Citric Acid, Ammonia, Copper and Iron.

The dyed samples are as follows
Alum – no modifier = yellow green
Alum + Citric Acid = yellow
Alum + Ammonia = golden yellow
Alum + Copper = golden yellow
Alum + Iron = green
