Hibiscus sabdariffa

This Natural Dye produces brown, no mordant is required for protein fibres, although an Alum mordant will help with colour fastness.

Use at a rate of 100% to dry weight of fibre.

A tannin and Alum mordant are required for all cellulose fibres.
For cellulose fibres use either
Aluminium Acetate at 5% in a heated mordant bath.
Aluminium Lactate at 5% in either a cold or heated mordant bath.

Can also be used in soap and candle making as flowers.

Not food safe, so please do not make a drink with these flowers.

The picture shows wool which has been mordanted with alum, then dyed with hibiscus flowers.

The left-hand skein shows how all the skeins originally came out of the dye pot. The other four were each dipped into a different modifier bath for approximately 10 minutes. From left-to-right these modifier baths were Citric Acid, Ammonia, Copper and Iron.

The dyed samples are as follows
Alum – no modifier = warm brown
Alum + Citric Acid = brown pink
Alum + Ammonia = green
Alum + Copper = brown
Alum + Iron = brown
