£5.00 inc. VAT

Gallium verum

This Natural Dye material contains all of the plant, not just the roots. The tops will produce yellow.

Use at a rate of 100% to dry weight of fibre.

An Alum mordant is required for protein fibres.

A tannin and Alum mordant are required for all cellulose fibres or  use either
Aluminium Acetate at 5% in a heated mordant bath.
Aluminium Lactate at 5% in either a cold or heated mordant bath.

The picture shows wool which has been mordanted with alum, then dyed with ladies bedstraw.

The left-hand skein shows how all the skeins originally came out of the dye pot. The other four were each dipped into a different modifier bath for approximately 10 minutes. From left-to-right these modifier baths were Citric Acid, Ammonia, Copper and Iron.

The dyed samples are as follows
Alum – no modifier = yellow
Alum + Citric Acid = cream
Alum + Ammonia = yellow
Alum + Copper = yellow
Alum + Iron = green

Not food safe, so please do not make a drink with this dye.
