Natural Dyes

Madder Root – Powder [50g]

£7.00 inc. VAT

Rubia Tinctorum

This Natural Dye material contains just the powdered roots. The colours produced can be deep red, red, scarlet, orange and purple depending on the modifiers and mordants used. The addition of chalk to soft water will improve the final colour. This dye bath will also produce a lot of exhaust dye.

Use at a rate of 20g per 100g of fibre.

An Alum mordant is required for protein fibres.

A tannin and Alum mordant are required for all cellulose fibres.

For cellulose fibres use either
Aluminium Acetate at 5% in a heated mordant bath.
Aluminium Lactate at 5% in either a cold or heated mordant bath.

The picture shows wool which has been mordanted with alum, then dyed with madder.

The left-hand skein shows how all the skeins originally came out of the dye pot. The other four were each dipped into a different modifier bath for approximately 10 minutes. From left-to-right these modifier baths were Citric Acid, Ammonia, Copper and Iron.

The dyed samples are as follows
Alum – no modifier = orange red
Alum + Citric Acid = orange
Alum + Ammonia = red
Alum + Copper = red orange
Alum + Iron = red purple
