Natural Dyes

Safflower whole [50g]

£4.00 inc. VAT

Carthamus tinctorius

This is also known as fake saffron, the stamens of the flower are dried to make the dye.
Use at 100% to Weight Of Fibre (WOF).

From this Natural Dye both a yellow and red can be produced. No mordant is necessary to produce a red colour, (but using an alkali modifier will produce the red on silk), but when used for yellow aids colour fastness.

For cellulose fibres use either
Aluminium Acetate at 5% in a heated mordant bath.

or
Aluminium Lactate at 5% in either a cold or heated mordant bath.

The dyed samples are as follows
Alum – no modifier = cream yellow
Alum + Citric Acid = light cream yellow
Alum + Ammonia = cream yellow
Alum + Copper = deep cream yellow
Alum + Iron = light yellow brown

Not food safe, so please do not make a drink with this dye.

Comes in a bag of 50g in weight.
We are changing over from plastic bags to re-sealable Kraft bags.

This will be shipped via Royal Mail 2nd class small parcels.
