Caesalpinia sappan (Brazilwood).
For this Natural Dye a mordant is recommended to produce strong red colours. The pH value of the water used can affect the colours produced.
Acidic water produces orange shades, whereas alkaline produces rich plum colours. This is a strong Natural Dye and can be used for several dye baths.
An Alum mordant is required for protein fibres.
A tannin and Alum mordant are required for all cellulose fibres.
Not food safe, so please do not make a drink with this dye.
The picture shows wool which has been mordanted with alum, then dyed with sappanwood.
The left-hand skein shows how all the skeins originally came out of the dye pot. The other four were each dipped into a different modifier bath for approximately 10 minutes. From left-to-right these modifier baths were Citric Acid, Ammonia, Copper and Iron.
