£6.00 inc. VAT

Juglans nigra

This Natural Dye material contains all of the hulls which have been chopped for ease of use. May also contain chopped shell.
the colours produced are a warm red/brown. the hulls can be used more than once to give different tones and shades.

For best results soak the hulls for 24 hours to extract the dye, although they can be used without soaking. If iron is added to the dye liquid then black can be achieved.

This is a substantive dye so no mordants are required, but modifiers will give interesting effects.

Please wear gloves as this dye will stain your hands brown.

Not food safe, so please do not make a drink with this dye.

The picture shows wool which has been mordanted with alum, then dyed with walnut hulls.

The left-hand skein shows how all the skeins originally came out of the dye pot. The other three were each dipped into a different modifier bath for approximately 10 minutes. From left-to-right these modifier baths were Ammonia, Copper and Iron.
